Copper gaskets
« on: September 22, 2008, 10:12:49 am »
When installing a copper head gasket, should a coating, such as copper coat be applied? I always did it on automotive applications due to coolant, but is it neccesary on an air cooled engine?

When you say copper head gasket your are talking about the copper rings right? If so i never applied any coating on mine. But for any liquid cooled engine yes but air cooled no. I never did.

I run homemade .040 copper head gaskets on both of my single OHV Briggs. I have reused both of them at least 5 times each, but you have to anneal them each time they are reused, heat them up witrh a torch until they turn blue or purple and either put them in water or let them cool normally. This makes them soft again and they conform to all the little irregularities between the head and the block. I use Copper Head gasket sealant, been doing this for 2 years now.

I too do the same as Tommy Huffyo47 and also use a copper coat or even a spray on gasket adhesive stuff on this last time I did it.

Guys here is a little tidbit from the IH farm tractor days. Use actual aluminum spray paint on these gaskets(not silver it isn't the same). We had to do this all the time on the 4 and 6 cylinder gassers as they wouldn't hold otherwise. We tried copper coat too with little success. The aluminum paint worked virtually every time.
