John Deere 160
« on: April 13, 2008, 09:52:37 pm »
I have a John Deere 160 with a 12.5 hp FB460v engine.  i have already changed the pulleys to a 4.5" on the engine and a 3.5" on the transaxle and it goes about 14mph.  What can i do to make it go faster without spending a lot of money?  Can i adjust the governor to get a little more speed out of it?

This sounds a bit like a BYB question...

This sounds a bit like a BYB question...

BYB or any form there off or any other name calling or labeling is not to be used on this forum. Everyone is a potential racer and will be given the same respect as given to known racers. Thank you for this understanding.

Now to answer your question on speeding up you mower what if any type of upgrades have you made to your steering front end and braking system on your mower. What are you doing with this mower at these speeds. There are some safety issue's that you really need to take care of before you speed up a mower. Ever hear of a high speed wobble. Trust me you not not want to experiance this on a mower.

This mower has a 5 speed peerless 840 transaxle.  i plan to weld up the front end and upgrading the brakes soon.  i do not expect to race it, it is just something to keep me busy and have fun with.

study the build threads and build to a sanctioned class. if you change your mind about racing then you will a step ahead.

If you want the look and feel of a racing tractor then as amcchevy says build it like a racer... build it to a particular class rules (including all the safety stuff) and you can't go wrong..

Most of the rules and specs and guidlines for a sanctioned racing mower deal with building a safe stable platform or chassis...that needs to come before the application of speed..

And by building to class rules, you do have the option of running in a race if you choose some day....Or selling it to a prospective racer...where a "non legal" chassis would have inherently less value...
