Johnboy mentioned the broken spring on the compression release.. I know of two late model 23 horizontal vanguards that are hard to crank. Anyone seen these fail?

Vanny's tend to be either valve lash or bad/dragging starters.

valve lash or bad/dragging starters

Of course you're right about that. I had been through my starter before, but went through it again and cleaned the grooves between the commutator segments, and put brushes in it although they didn't look that bad. Also had been running the precision cam at about 007-008 lash. Tightened to 005. Before, it'd only start on electric when cold, had to pull start assist when hot. I was thinking heat soaked starter field magnets in the argo engine compartment. After tightening lash and commutator/brushes it's been cranking when hot. I was surprised.

Untill you get the money to buy the EC springs, witch I highly recommend because they are longer than stock. You can shim the stock springs with a washer and pick up a couple hundred rpm's that way.

can the shimming be done on the briggs opposed too? and if so just 1 washer? and on the intake, exhaust or both? Thanks

I don't know. I haven't tryed it. The OHV heads have a retainer area that keeps the valve spring in place. The washer fits in that area. Valve in block motors don't have this. I don't think the washer will stay under the spring. On the OHV motors I use just 1 washer under both valve springs. One of the washers will have to have a bigger hole drilled in it in order to make it fit.

If you shim the valve springs you must be careful not to shim too much for fear of the springs  binding!

True; but all I used was a 3/8" washer. It might be only .030 to .040 thick.
