I have welded a few up with just regular old mig welding!  Tried several things but Mig was the only one I could make stick.  I have heard that some use nickel alloy.

Welding isn't the hard part!  Grinding it correctly is!   Of the 3 that I have done only 1 ran better than stock.  That one I gave away to a buddy and he is still running it.  It runs better than stock.........................................and that is about it!

No problem!  What I did was to take some bad cams and practice on them.  (old bent ones, or ones for engines that will never run again!)  Getting the weld to stick is the main problem I had.  I cranked up our wire welder to the max setting and sped the wire up a bit to make the wire "build up" but need the heat for penetration.  Not sure if a 110 welder would work.  We have a Miller millermatic 250 wire welder with shielding gas, it is a 220 welder.

Good luck

Brass or nickel alloy. You can get these from northern tool or Home Depot.

UMMM....... brass?  I don't think so.  Brass is soft and won't last very long on a cam shaft.   I know Don G's cams LOOK like they have brass on them, but it is something different!  So please don't use brass on your cam, bad things will happen!

I was always told that the cam needs to be heated before you weld it...  Is there any truth to that?

And yes, anything cast has to be heated before it is welded to keep stress cracks down.
