 How long has briggs made the avs ballancing system and do these have differant Modell# than syncro ballance ones, the reason I asked is looked at a 31 ohv single but didnt know if it was avs or not is there any easy way to tell??

How old is the motor? Also they put a little sticker that says AVS on some of them.
Also get us some numbers and we can look it up.

 After going to briggs site seams avs are ones with letter code on third didget like this 31p700 avs- if third didget is a number!! 311700 than its syncro balanced. may be Im wrong but so far seems right! oh talking model #####

One easy way to identify the block is the oil fill tube.  On the AVS the fill tube goes into the block above the pan.  On the older non-AVS engine,  the block is scalloped around the filler tube and the tube goes into the pan itself.

I think you have it backwards Jack I have 2 AVS motors 06 models and both the dipsticks go directly into the sump cover and the non AVS goes in at the block and another way to tell is where the crank comes out the sump cover on bottom it will be 1.25 inches in diameter and step down to a 1 inch and on a Non avs the whole thing is 1 inch.
