Caution...Grown Man Crying...
« on: April 24, 2006, 07:28:28 pm »
Arrrrrgh...

Fired up Sami's J/P motor...Started nice...ran good, got the carb tweaked in to idle and rev clean...

Didn't take it over 4500rpm, just "burprd" it a few times...

And then all heck broke loose...

Govener rod started clicking and bouncing like the flyweights were hitting the govener rod (that's not supposed to do that...)  :?

And before I could shut 'er down..BOOM... Blew the counterweight out the back...

Everything still spins free in there etc... Crank and cam look OK as well as valve train..I don't believe anything "locked up"...

Near as I can tell, the govener must have let loose and a piece got wedged between rod and counterweight on downstroke...and blew the counterweight out the back???

Rod is broke, but it happend at not much more than a fast idle ...not under power...Not sure that was the cause as much as collateral damage...

Motor was warm, but not "hot"..??

Sucks...Oh well pull out the back up and start over..

Open for trained eye observations..

  I am not so sure the governor coming apart caused such a catastrophic disaster. Hard to say but from what I see I think the counter weight let go first. Or the rod itty bitty rod that holds the counter wieght in check with all the other moving parts. I have seen many with hairline fractures. For the extra security of 25.00 put the small billet syncro rod from ARC in it. Just my opinions from what I see and have seen over the years. I ain't a Briggs Master Service Tecnician for nothing.

Well, I was just out in the garage scoping it out a bit more...

I actually did have the ARC billet countershaft rod in there...

BUT...The rod is not bent or damaged...nor is the "pin" it's supposed to ride on...??

And from the direction of travel of the weight blowing out the back...it should have ripped that out as well...???

Is it possible I didn't have the ARC rod "on" the pin...?

I swear I did...and you would think it would have clunked, knocked or locked up when I spun it up on the breakin stand for an hour prior to fireing it up...

Dang... I was hopeing it wasn't installer error...

OUCH!

I'm not sure Squidd, but I don't think you're gonna be able to fix that one with  the JB Weld.

To better understand the way it self destructed get me some pictures of the balance assy, open motor and take a picture with the pan off then remove cam and take picture remove rod from crank get a picture of journal and rod. We are trained to look at parts and figure or determine the way it come apart and why especially on warranty jobs you know kinda like detectives redoing a crime scene to figure out what went on and why. I think it was all started by the counter balance letting gothe real question is how and why. If I had it in front of me I could disect it and tell you what happened. But email me some more pics as you dismantle  and I will see if I can tell you exactly what happened.

That would be cool...will do George...

I did have problems with the original balancer, and had to replace it with another unit. I "believe" I put it together correctly, but I had it together and apart several times working on clearances...Half used, half new parts in there...

I would liketo get to the bottom of my "5 minute motor" so I can avoid this on the next one...

Don't worry Matt, Sami will have a motor if I have to pull one from my IMOW to get her to the first race....Probably do that just to get it up and running and work the bugs out...

I have a couple more blocks laying around and a couple weeks...should have a replacement up soon...

Yeah, got the book, went out and bought an inch/lb torque wrench and everything...

Kinda wish I had let Sami build the motor...Be able to "divert" some of this attention her way...

Should have seen her little face when I told her...

"What'd YOU Do..!?!"   <<< (I think she get's that from her Mom..)

It's all good George...

Even if I did screw up royaly, did something wrong, forgot to put something in...(or find that 9/16" socket I thought I lost... )

It's all a good learning experiance in the big Oval of Life...

And certainly better now, then the Friday before the big race..

Or Heaven forbid...Have a motor burn down "during" a big race....
