rod questions?
« on: January 26, 2008, 08:10:04 am »
I am building another engine for a stock class this year and had some questions whether a couple things are bad or good to do to a rod....

I was looking through Brian Miller's site and saw where I can use a 12 hp ALCOA rod and it will hold up to a .350 lift cam... This is perfect for what I am needing except I need this to run in a 10 hp (10hp 5.558 rod length) (12hp 5.3 rod length)

So I looked farther down the page and came up with this:

The big end of an OEM 12, 14, 16hp or 18hp ALCOA connecting rod will need to be bored .0100" offset toward the oil dipper so the piston will come flush with the top of the block. Or it can be bored .80" offset toward the oil dipper for a .020" piston pop-out. Bearing inserts will need to be installed.

My question is would this be good for the rod? Or would it be bad because he taking out material from the rod therefore weakening the rod?

Also Kohler rod doesn’t have an oil hole in the wrist pin hole would it be good to add one? I have never run one but I was told this would be a good idea?

Thanks,
Oultaw

Outlaw yes you can remove the ruff casting on the rod & you can also drill a small hole to help oil the wrist pin.I beed blast all my steel rods to relieve the stress.

Okay thats good to know that I was hurting my connecting rods when I was removing the casting and polishing them!  :) I was wondering about getting them shot peened and now I will...
Thanks Hitchhiker for the response!

Off setting the wristpin presents other issues. And that all depends on how much material ya have to work with. I have tinkered with the on occasion and have had breaking issue's. But that doesn't mean anything.

OKay,
The reason I asked is because I was worried about breaking issues but I was told the alcoa rod could handle it??? Maybe it's one of those R&D things HuH? I'll problably give it a whirl but if I dont like it I guess I am going to go to a billet rod form lakota racing!

Thanks,

All this breaking I did was with stock rods. THEY can't be done and hold up.
