28 Cube Flywheel Removal Problem
« on: January 13, 2008, 02:19:34 pm »
I am having trouble removing my 28 cube ARC flywheel. When I removed it before off my other engine I ran two bolts through the threaded holes, took two hammers and put one on the shaft and hit the other one and it came loose. This time it will not budge. With two hammers it is flaring the shaft with light taps. I have even put some very light heat on the hub with no luck. Shane Shellnut broke a hub recently trying to remove one running the bolts down. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you get it off. Tony

I use a flywheepuller on mine. Tighten it down tap the threaded rod and repeat as necessary. I use this all the time with no issues at all.

Kmowtion,
Are you refering to a 2 or 3 jaw puller that pulls from around the ring gear?

If you build it, it should fly.
take it out and let it eat...

I was having the same problem, another guy that I race with made a puller that uses all eight of the timing adjustment bolt holes as opposed to the two small bolt holes. You can get more even pressure and the bolts don't pull out of the holes.

Also, using an impact wrench on the puller helps.

Put some tension on it and smack the bolt on the puller.

I got mine at Auto Zone. It is shaped like a T or a cross with slots on the arms for the bolts to go through into the flywheel. The theaded extender goes through the center and is pointed to fit into the center of the crankshaft. Tighten it up and hit the top with a hammer then repeat as necessary. I don't personally use impact wrenches to remove them could end up stripping out the bolt holes. I do use an impact to put them on with though. I do this on my ARC flywheel looks very similar to the picture here.
