Cam/Crank Interference
« on: April 09, 2006, 04:39:10 pm »
My Cam hits my Crank...

Timing is correct, but the inner edge of the intake lobe just "clicks" on the Crank weight...

So do I want to grind the edge or corner off the cam lobe...? (will still have plenty of "face" for lifting)

Or grind off the mass of the crank weight...? (do I need to grind the other Mass to account for balance?)

I do have Don's video, and I know he addresses it there...But it's like four hours long and I was hopeing to get this done yet tonight...

So I guess I'll go make some popcorn and get started on the video... but I'd appreciate a quick answer if you can... 8)

have done it both ways and prefer grinding the crank. It doesn't effect balance enough you can feel anything. But this is what I do.

Good, that's kinda what I was thinking, just didn't want to create stress risers or imbalance situation on the crank...

Plus you saved the Family from "another" night of Motor Video Marathon...

OH Nooo...!!! Not the Motor Video AGAIN...!!!

Yep...That works...Ground the nubs on the rod journal and a bit on the counter weight mass to clear the cam lobes...

Cleaned 'er all up and then started assembly..

Got the lower end together..good clearance (had to adjust the timing gear for end play on the crank)..

Then started on the valve train...

Exhaust went fine...Have good lash...but the Intake "bound" on the spring...

Took it apart and put it back together three times, switching out springs and retainers .... (getting good at that now)

Finally realized I needed to cut the intake retainer keeper groove a little higher to gain the room...

That worked well too.. No bindage..

Check out this Cam thread to see what I was fighting... 8)
