Newbie to Mower Racing - Advice on build

I've had to put this project on hold for a little while.  I've had quite a few expenses on my car and all my time and money has been going towards it.

Anyways, I was out parts running for the car...I always look for an extra junk mower for parts.  Well, I spotted one at a scrap iron drop off...well, really it's just a guys backyard that he allows people to drop of scrap...you can't imagine how much stuff stacks up in a few weeks time.  I was driving past and spotted a lonely rider, so I turned around to see what was left of it.  It was a chain drive Sears with a Peerless 700...awesome.

I had figured on lowering my mower down with the use of the Peerless 600 and a jackshaft, but now I'm thinking of using the 700.  The only thing is that I would have to use the stock rear axle that came on the donor.  As you can read from the rest of this topic, we have a pretty limited budget.  I can't spend alot on other parts...especially a cart rear axle!  I figure I'll be putting most of my budget into pulleys, bearings and belts.  The difference in the jackshaft to the chain drive, I figured to be around $20-25 for the extra bearings, shaft and belts.

Any opinions on what I should do?  Will the stock axle and the "cheesy" bearings hold up to 25-35mph speeds?

I've completed my mower.  If someone wouldn't mind hosting a pic of it for me, I can email them a pic.

I didn't really want to mess around with any photo hosting sites, but if I'm gonna have to I might as well.  Well here it is.
