just wondering what that flapper thingy is on the backside of the cam gear.  It looks like it flipps out at high rpm.  Do I need this?

The flapper thingy you see is the compresion release to make the stock engine start easier.  If you plan on turn more than stock rpms you need to remove it  because it will fly lose and really do some major damage.

The stock starter should still turn it over if you have a good battery.  If the starter has trouble it will be on the compresion stroke just make  sure that the engine is not on the compression stroke when you try to start it turn the flywheel by hand to get it over the compression stroke then try to start it.  If the the flywheel has been lightened you will notice it mower than with a stock flywheel.

You might also want to order a few extra gears for the starter. They have a tendency to strip occasionally if you hit compression stroke wrong on it, but they do change fairly easy if you have an extra one on hand.

You may also want to turn the motor over (starter)with no juice to the coils , once she starts spinning add spark . This will help keep the ring gear in one pc.
