Briggs and Stratton Intek 280H07
« on: March 21, 2006, 08:33:33 pm »
Hello.  I am a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy and am working on a racing lawnmower for my senior design project.  Apparently when we were ordering our engine we made a mistake and got the Briggs and Stratton Intek 280H07 instead of the Model 28.  We are trying to buy a billet flywheel and connecting rods for it but I have been unable to find out if I can do that.  I talked to Tom Cole at ARC Racing today and he pointed me to the forum.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hate to disapoint you Randy but that is a AVS model Engine their is no rod to fit that engine at this time. Not a billet anyhow. It has the large crank journal. The stock rod will however run 6500 rpm no problem. The only ARC part you can use on this engine is the model 28 flywheel. Now the piston in this motor is the piston we use with the ARC rod in the Standard OHv fx motors and 28 cube SP motors. SO John what you will need is an older standard OHV motor. It will be any model number like 28n707. Basically any 28 series ohv with out the H in the model number.

Not completely disapointed George...

Because if I'm reading this right...the "H" denotes the AVS block...

And that's where I can find the rod and piston to go with the 31" OHV large journal crank... to build the "cheater stroker" in a 28 flatty...

Did I read that right??

Sorry to have mislead you TreCool626... these dang interchanges are a tough cookie to crack...fourtunatly we have George here to straighten  us out...

You are correct in that respect Randy. It is what we used to build 12 hp engines before ARc come into the picture.

Thanks for the help/advice.  Because of a time/money constraint we can't change the engine we have.  You said the ARC flywheel will work though?  Also where can we get new valve springs and can we still use cheap plates and are we going to have any kind of counterweight problem?  One of the teams last year experienced a problem with this.  Thanks again.

I have a set of performance springs single wind and billet retainers good for 8000 rpm with up to a 440 lift cam 45.00 this includes shipping. You would be better off balancing the crank so you do not have to use the counter slide weight used in that engine. I am not sure what you are referring to when you say plates. What do you mean by that.

Aaron Crowl, our point of contact, mentioned "Cheap Plates"  (atleast I think that's what they are called).  I believe they are brass plates that attach to the crankshaft to balance the engine.

What method of balancing the crank would you recommend?

Oh ok well unfortunatley they won't fit That crank. You will have to find someone to balance the crank Like Don Gienger or a machine shop equiped to do so,

I have one of these engines as well and I was wondering about the stock valve retainers they look like automotive style retainers and keepers on both the intake and exhaust. How are they for failure,or do they stand up pretty good?

They will hold up if you do not go over 6000 rpm and do not bind the springs.

Thanks I was thinking that they looked pretty good. If I find I need more I will get in touch with you for some of those billet pieces and springs.
