Couple vanny questions for George
« on: August 15, 2007, 11:11:11 pm »
1)Can you get .010 under rod bearings for the arc rods. I have the rods but the crank that will be used is .001 out of round.

2)What is the id of the big end of an arc rod with out the bearing in it. I need the big end id measurement. 1.6??

I am helping my little cousin and his dad put together a 18hp vanny with an animal grind cam from precision and some rods from ARC. He bought the long rods and we already have the pistons cut. He also has the two barrel carb and intake and heads from another vanguard. Just want everything correct before final assembly

Thanks Dennis

They only have stock rod bearings at this time unless they have gotten them in in the last few weeks and I was not aware if it. Not sure of the measurement of the big end without a bearing in it. If you already have them pull the bearing and measure them. I had a gentleman up north have his crank journal weld up and reground. Not sure what that would entail but he says he had it done. I know they do it to car cranks I have had it done before. Gotta be cheaper than buying a new crank.

DO you have a snap bore guage. Use that then check with calipers. I will try to get to it ASAP.

Another possibility on the crank is flame spraying. Been a while since I had it done, but I had an outer roller bearing race built up in chrome about .002" and then finish ground to fit a loose case on a harley. Cheaper than a new case, but not cheap.

Hey George. I tried to get ahold of the correct tooling to measure the big end id but was unable to get the tooling. I was going to buy one but no one in town has it. I want to use the bearing for another application after seeing the ones my cousin has. I just need the finished big end bore size of the rod.

Thanks Dennis

Happy new year everyone!!!!

My cousin got his vanny assembled. He ran it on a break in stand we built and then drained and refilled the oil. The engine has the long arc rods with a precision cam. The pistons were also cut. The problem is the starter that was on it before we tore it down would crank and start the engine with no problem. However it wants nothing to do with the flat top pistons. He has a billet steel wheel with a stock steel ring gear. What starter should he use. He has a couple different starters for the vangaurds. They both look different. One would require some shroud modifications to bolt on. Thanks Dennis

The stock ring gear is the correct pitch for the 808726 high torque dens  starter. Some shroud and underflywheel sheet metal work is needed for proper fitting.
