spark plugs
« on: March 04, 2006, 09:01:17 pm »
Just installed my new billet flywheel on a 20hp Intek and when test running it, it acts like one of the plugs is firing intermitantly.  Runs smooth for several seconds and then rough for a while and the exhaust sound changes.  It has plugs in it that have the Briggs logo on them and I would like to put in some better ones.  What is a good plug to use in the Inteks?

NGK Get a cross over for a Champion RC12YC . I do not know the number off my head but this is what we use in our Briggs OHV. Any of them.

Installed new platinum plugs and there is no difference.  The only thing I have done to this motor is added the billet flywheel, no internal work at all.  It is acting like maybe the valves are floating at high RPM's.  Are the springs in the 20 HP Intek so week that this could be a possibility?  It reaches higher RPM's now with  the aluminum flywheel.  Or could it be a carburation problem?  There is a noticable difference in  power and in the sound from the exhaust.

One other thing I did do to it was, I cut off the tip of the plunger on the solonoid on the carb.

ya youll probly have the problem of the valves floating because the spirings are not quite strong enough to handle the rpms so they will begin to float arpund 5000 or so so you could get billet valve keepers and double springs

How exactly do you do double springs?  I have heard that you can use springs from an 8HP Briggs and put them inside the stock Inteck springs.  Do you use intake with intake and exhaust with exhaust, or some other combination?  Will the stock retainers work for this or do I need to get some other retainers?  And what are the specs for gapping the valves on a 20 Hp Intek?  Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
