18.5 BRIGGS wont start, Help!!!!
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:58:15 pm »
Hey guys,
Whats up? I have a MTD Ranch King with a 18.5 Briggs on it. It won't start. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It barley cranks over. I Charged the battery and then put it back in and then it still wouldn't crank over. Then I hooked a car battery to jumper cables and to the battery. It still would barley crank over. Ive made sure it wasn't locked up. I'm running out of ideas to get it running. any one else have this problem? I got the battery on the charger right now. I don't know what to do now, Any help would be apprestated.

Do you have another starter you can test out on that engine?  Just in case somthings wrong with the solenoid, ground your negative jumper cable and touch the positive to the starter and see if it does the same thing.

Another thing to try is place your hand on the screen/cover of the flywheel
and try to turn it over, if it is dificult to do on any other stroke but the compression stroke
something could be wrong.

yea i tried both of those ideas. It dose have problems on the compression stroke i think im just having electrical problems I dont have a extra starter so I dont know what else to do. Im going to let the battery charge for a few more hours

The reasion i think im having electrical problems is because it spins pretty slow and also because when it turns with the jumper cables it will spin fast enough that the starter cant engage

usualy if the polarity is backwards, the starter will whine, but not engage., Because it spins back wards, also if it dosent engage there is not enough juice.

Have you checked the valve clearance? If the exhaust clearance is too great, the compression release won't do it's job...

IT didnt have enough juice to spin the starter. All I had to do what Change a fuse that was blown and That was it
