VG 20hp Couple Q's
« on: May 23, 2007, 03:07:22 pm »
Got a few Vanny questions. This pertains to a 20 hp VG V-TWIN.

I tore down the engine last night and was happy to find a nice and clean interior with no signs of overheating or sludge or anything....everything looks new. Prior to teardown I had less than 4% leakdown in each cylinder. Cross hatch is visable and no ring ridge at all.

Holy cow that flywheel weighs a ton!!! An ARC wheel will be ordered this week (Starter as well).

Question on coil packs.....are better once avail or do the stock ones perform even at higher than stock governed rpms?

SPARK PLUGS: I will be running the smaller chamber 16hp heads with the thin aluminum head gasket. What would be a ballpark plug# to start with?

Heads will be cleaned ported, new EC valve springs.....
A new CAM will also be installed

Would I be stupid to run this engine with the stock connecting rods and pistons???
I know longer ARC rods with cut pistons is the ticket but my wallet differs!!

What kind of RPM can the stock c-rods take?

Thanks!

I know, where do you stop spending $

I think the stock pistons are solid; the rods.. well you'll be thinking about them when the throttle's wide open and the aftermarket cam wants to rev. I think the stock ignition is ok. Oh heck it's only another $300 for rods/rings/gaskets

Remember if you do the long rod to add an extra washer on the spark plugs for clearance. Thanks to George for graduating the School of Hard Knocks for us.

Now the experts can answer your questions.

I remember George H saying that the stock coils do perfectly fine on his engiens.

-Phil
..."I used that motto to keep going, keep pushing, keep digging to
find a way around, or through to find a hole, some kind of break that
would allow some space. Once something broke thru, I could be there to
take advantage. Then I would finish 7th instead of 10th." - Dubba G

The ARC rods are good insurance.  I wouldn't spend the money you're gonna spend if I could spend a few extra dollars and put the 2 ARC rods in there.  I'd get the rods before I got the flywheel!

After sleeping on it....I will order the ARC RODS, a new CAM, CUT PISTONS,......basicly all internals then hopefulley get the FLYWHEEL very soon!

I may just go nuts and order all that I need and be done with it!  It will only set me back  about....$1000

Well just to see what everyone had to say now I will jump in. All good advice by the way. NOW.. Stock coils are great. Stock rods 5500 and thats all I would trust them. If you are gonna spend the money on all the rest and not the rods, don't bother just send it to me and I can find a good way to spend it with out wasting it. Nothing meant bad by that other than do it right the first time and you will be very thankful the first time you slip a tire in mud or break a chain or forwhatever reason she hits the top rpms 6500 to 8000 by accident free reving and it stays together to do it again. With stock rods you will by a motor. Blocks are 250.00 plus whatever else you pop. GEt the extended rods and shave the stock pistons very dependable setup even turned the same setup 11500 twice (accident) with no ill effects. E.C. stocks everything you need fropm flywheel to rods to gaskets, to cams. We can fix you up.

As far as spark plugs go I like to use the NGK's because you can read them easily, you can tell by the amount of plating thats burnt off to get the cylinder temp reading by a few degrees without having expensive monitors, after all it is the plug reading that matters more than anything. I use the FR5's.
George has some good advice for you, and E.C. is very reasonable with their prices.   Ryan
