few engine questions.
« on: May 20, 2007, 11:28:51 am »
i got a opposed briggs and stratton twin 18.5 hp. I want it to idle as slow as possible but i cant seem to get it where i want. i had a singlee cylinder that would idle very slowy, just barely running but i cat seem to achieve that on my engine. Also how do i get a lower sound from the exhaust. I want a  more lower rumbly sound. But it still sounds like a lawn mower. I made custom pipes on it. The go out straight, the have lawn mower mufflers welded in them. then the it curves around back straight for about 2 and a half feet and have a small curve at the end point sideways. no flair or anything. I can get pics if nessesary .
This is on my homemade  got cart kart.

If you want a deeper, rumblier sound, take squidds advice and go with larger diameter
exhaust, i run a 2.5" on my Kohler command 15HP, also explain your "custom" exhaust
one more time , if i read correctly, did you say that you welded muflers inside of them?
I made custom pipes on it. The go out straight, the have lawn mower mufflers welded in them. then the it curves around back...
if so, why? As for as making it idle lower, your on your own....
By the way you should have at least 22" - 28" depending on the bends you make, for sound, and
for rules/regulations(DEPENDING).
Andrew,
post pics too

"mower" mufflers restrict on the sound and performance becuase someone mowing theyre lawn wouldnt want the sound of a "real" muffler blasting the entire time, so the companies put theyre quite mufflers on them

Greasemonkey, thanks for the pics, also removing the muffler will give you the sound you are looking for. More flow = more performance, kinda

The 3/4" will give you a snappier higher-pitched sound, so get some 2"
or so on there. ;) the length is good too.
Andrew
you should also think about putting a tip of larger pipe for better sound.
