'Nother AP Question...
« Reply #15 on: January 07, 2006, 08:20:31 pm »
Couple new things from the shop...

I went to "reinforce" the steering knuckles as George had suggested...

1/8" X 1" flat stock cut to fit and welded in...when I took them apart I did notice one of the tie rod "tabs" had already been bent !!!

I also wasn't too thrilled with the slop in the poly bushings it came with...So I went and picked up some brass bushings...

I had to drill the sleeve out to accept the thicker bushings (finely found a "use" for that 23/32" drill bit I had laying around.... )

Then line bore the inside to a straight snug and smooth fit on the King pin...

While I was at it I drilled, tapped and added grease zerks to help keep things smooth...

What I though was a "deal" at $28 a pair ends up almost as much as some of the better steering sets I've seen and I still have the "generic|" axels...

Next time I'm buyng the good stuff and be done with it...

But for now, I'm pretty happy with the upgrades... 8)

While I was "up front" I added hood mounts, solinoid mount and welded in the battery box...

Little weight up front, low and slightly to the left is a good thing..

1/8"X1 flat stock "secures" the battery...no lose battery flopping around in an accident (God Forbid)

1/8" aluminum diamond plate covers the chain and sprockets in the rear...

And I have the shifter lever set up to "lock" in third after starting line upshift...

Rules state..."All exposed chains and sprockets must be fitted with metal guards, which will direct a broken chain downward"...

Which makes real good sense to me seeing how the chain is directly below me centered between my legs...

overall width

Hi Squidd I was wondering what the overall width of your AP tractor is? Mine looks like it is going to be 34" outside to outside on the rims. Do most of the guys take it out to the max Width?

We measure to the outside of the tire side wall (furthest point out) with a large "caliper" set at 38".... either fits inside or it don't...

Everyone that races "fits" inside the gauge..some rub tight to it, others have a bit of clearance to max....

Mine, with the current wider tire and wheel combo, comes right in at 37 3/4" outside...front- 37 1/4"...

I also have another set of front and rear tires that are skinnier, with a slightly different rim to center offset, that will come in around 36  and 36 1/2" F+R respectively...

Hardest part was the flange on the 8hp with the 1 1/4" pipe...Not much room for the mounting bolts, but carefull bending and a couple socket head bolts and we're in there...

Been a LONG time since I had to gas weld "inside" a pipe...

Down under and out the side it's a clean little set up...

And with the "Kit" and prebent parts...didnt take mower than an hour or so to do...and that's worth a lot right there...

Now that the exhaust is in, I can set my hood mounts and hood..

Bolted in the dash,  added a larger steering wheel (15" compared to 12" stock), and made a mount for the Digitron Tach...

Now (I think) we'll tear it down, do just a bit of body work and paint, and I'll be ready for final assembly... 8)

Unless you guys can think of something I might have missed...

Like my seat mount...dang it... :x

I was glassin' the rear fender and realized I never set the final seat position (I was waiting for hood and steering wheel to get the final "feel" for position)...

Oh well, will get that just before spraying...

In the mean time my sponsor provided a trailer...

It's an older 6'x12' job site trailer...(He upgraded, I got one of the older ones)

Price was right...Leave his lettering on the side and I could have it !! (Saves me from having to repaint the exterior!!)

Inside, Sami and I pulled most of the shelving and repainted the interior ...should be able to get 3 mowchines and a tool box in there...
