NOISE FROM UNDERFLYWHEEL
« on: May 01, 2007, 02:25:52 pm »
I have a 14hp ohv engine that i seems to have a squeal from under the flywheel.  I think there is a bearing in there, but has anyone else had this problem?  Or heard this kind of noise. Prior to the noise I tore it apart and reassembled it.  Could it be possible that the oil hasn't got up in the motor to properly lube it yet.

Do you have a charger on there?

Yeah it sounds to me like your charging system is rubbing the inside of the flywheel or there is some rubbing some where in there.

You have to have the right spacing in between the charger and flywheel.

Sounds like the armature for the alternator is rubbing.  Pull the Flywheel off and check and see.  I have had pieces of the magnets break off and lay up against the Alternator and flywheel.  If everything looks good check for bare metal rub marks on the flywheel side.  Good Luck

It has to be the stator other wise it is an internal part in the engine.

Thanks for the help, I will check tonight to see if anything rubbing in side.  Yes it does have a charger.  The mower ran for 3min prior to squeal.  After it started squealing I shut it down, and turned the flywheel by hand and it still made the noise.  After 15 to 20 rotations by hand the noise stopped and went away.  I havent tried to start it yet, wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before possible making it worse. Thanks again for the help

If it were my engine i would take the flywheel of and remove the stator under the flywheel.

if its for racing, do away with the stator, if the squeek is still there, it could be a bearing or possibaly something worse.
