Polishing Crankshaft:
« on: April 29, 2007, 07:16:25 am »
ARC  Racing offers the service of polishing the crankshaft. What material is used for doing this, and where would one purchase it? The journel on mine has some very light rust on and I would like to clean it up prior to engine assembly. Thanks

Crankshaft polish machine turns crank one way then has sand paper that turns the other way so that it takes off material the same all way around. These machine aren't cheap. If you try to do this with out a machine you normally egg shape the crank. Arc rod or any rods won't hold up on a egg shape crank. Most local machine shops offer this! Its normally not expensive.

600 grit sandpaper cut to the right length and taped around the journal so that it doesn't overlap, then a shoelace, one of the flat ones, wrapped around the sandpaper so that it turns back and forth when you pull on the ends.Wet the sand paper with a little bit of varsol and start sanding.

It's great to get replies to questions with sarcastic replies like using spell check........in addition to using spell check there is a little button on the computer called "Shift", it capitalizes letters of the alphabet that need to be capitalized........don't throw rocks when you live in a glass house.

Now to answer the question, It's always better to have something professionally done.  Cost is always an issue but, you get what you pay for.
