high torque starter for a 16hp vanguard v-twin
« on: March 21, 2007, 08:09:08 pm »
Ok if I read correctly the nippo starter from ARC won't work with the stock flywheel.  So my question is are they a starter out there that will work with the stock flywheel and ringgear that has more power than the stock starter or as much power as the nippo starter from ARC?

It will work , You may have to shime it to fit right so it doesn't eat the ring gear . That should be done with the power off to the mower , just put power to the selenoid to make the starter drive engage .
The stock ringgear don't hold up like the one on the ARC flywheel but they do work .

Does the Nippo starter correspond to a Briggs part number?

I was hoping George would chime in on this one.  I want to eventually get the flywheel too, but right now money is tight and I need this motor to fire up with a lawnmower battery.  Right now it's taking a big car battery!!

... is are they a starter out there that ....has more power than the stock starter or as much power as the nippo starter from ARC?

If there was we would all already be using them on our high compression motors...(I looked...there is a Kawai starter out there that fits but no money savings or torque increase over HDBriggs))

As it is there are only three choices as already stated...

The "stock" starter... The Briggs HD twin starter ... and the "slightly" Heavier Duty  Nippendenso starter...

Pay your money and make your choice...

The ARC wheel matches the pitch of the Nipp starter...

But either of the other two "combos" will work with proper set up and shimming..
(stock wheel/Nipp or Arc wheel/Briggs HD)

808726 if the stock wheel has the steel rign gear it will work no problem. If it has the aluminum ring gear it will over time eat the teeth off as it does with any aluminum ring gears over time. It was designed for the Vanguard v-twins. It was designed as a direct bolt on piece.
