Allow me to introduce myself.
« on: February 09, 2006, 04:14:15 pm »

Hi, I'm Jeff. This is where I grew up, my Father is a lawn mower mechanic. Now I'm just about 30, but as a child my past time was to pick out a mower and modify it. Of course he would'nt let me destroy a "John Deere", but he let me do what ever I wanted to the genaric ones. He used to have more riders, but the city made him clean up his yard, so now he only has the J-D's.
By the time I was 15 I had built about 4 racing mowers. The most I did to them was just change the pullies and sprokets to up the gear ratio, I would leave the motor's and ride hight stock, sure made for a fun ride.
My favorite was an old "Lawn Lion", it was a 8hp electric start front engine mower, I had the ratio set up so high I would have to start out in 1st gear, then bang though all 3 speeds. That sucker was quick. But I could go on and on, but I'll quite now. Just wanted to say hi.

What do the peerless gear box's come from that you guy's are allways talking about, and you guy's only use one gear while racing?

Most common place to find one would be a rear engine mower with chain drive axle...

And yes, once up to racing speed, tranny is left in gear of choice, and overall gearing changed thru pulley and sprocket selection.

Thats what most of the mower I've seen have, minus rear engine snappers, hydro's and transaxcels. So the peerles is used in any brand mower? My lawn lion had a 3 speed W/R in the "H" pattern out the center top on the gear box, was that a peerles?

It just seem's weird to me to not use more then one gear, I would allways start from a stop in a low gear and work my way up for better acceleration, or I would drop down a gear for a bend. But then again my 8hp engine, was still 8hp.

in one of the pictures you have up there, theres a JD68 thats trying to climb the wall.....i got my first peerless from one of those!

Ive gotten a couple from front engine mowers too though, i just got two last night from the mower junkyard here. One off of a good ol JD68, and one from a front engine with an 8hp briggs flathead off brand mower.

Nice collection there though. They guys i race with are JD only guys!
Oh come on man. You got no lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, or crap flappers?
No, I don't.
You're gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

I have one mower left over that's mine, it's a rear engine John Deere simular to that 68. I'm thinking about setting it up A/P, but I'm not sure if it has the 34" wheelbase thats required, I dont see very many rear engine lawn mowers being used, why is that?

I kinda had an idea it might be because of that, but cant the driver just lean to the front while turning? But I suppose with a locked rear end, and the seat in the back it would take a lot of leaning to transfer the weight. I was starting to wonder if there was somthing in the rules that I missed about rear engine mowers.

There is but one on the US circuit right now that has any great success. He drives a Ariens RER in SP there was one indentical to it that ran FX he was GOOD but has retired. The SP still races won the Points CHampionship last year too. That paticular RER seems to work well.

We have run a few rear engine tractors and have found that the driver is a big piece of weight that affects handling and having him(or her)sitting that far ahead of the rear axel helps the steering.Getting the driver sitting low enough is probably part of what makes it work well. A lot of people seem to forget that the driver weight is a big part of handling, and good steering geometry helps.I wouldent hesitate on the rear engine but like was said it may take some sorting out like they all do,dont be afraid to cut it up and make changes when necessary.

i have a friend that runs a juhn deere 68 in our local league. all he has done to it is taken the gov off of the 11hp briggs, and put the pulleys at a 1-1. He is a big contender even with the faster machines. matter of fact, my live axle vanguard powered well built machine was the only one that hs beat him in 4 years.....
With that machine, its ALL about drivers weight.

Would it be a bad idea to use a live axle on a Rear engine? I know having the rear tires locked would make it a lot harder to turn.
