British 12 Hour Race This Weekend!
« on: August 03, 2016, 02:55:36 pm »

If you think that ride on mowers can’t offer much of a spectacle, think again! Fast, fun and furious, lawn mower racing is motorsport at its most eccentric and the BLMRA’s flagship event, the world-renowned 12 Hour Race takes place on Saturday, 6th August.
The venue is once again Five Oaks, near Billingshurst in West Sussex RH14 9AE – just off the A29. Qualifying, which is open to the public, starts at 3.45pm, with the race commencing at 8pm.

We are also pleased to announce that we are being supported by Phoenix Motorcycle Training who, as one of the fastest growing training organisations in England, offer a tailored programme of instruction for all rider levels at centres across the south of England.
12 hours of intense racing!

As usual, the teams will line up in a traditional Le Mans grid formation with the drivers running to their machines at the start.
The teams of three drivers (male and female) compete throughout the night at speeds approaching 50 mph – and without any form of suspension other than a padded seat, this is no stroll in the park! The pace remains unrelenting for the full 12 hours and it’s not unknown for the first three mowers to be on the same lap when the chequered flag drops. This is a true test of human endurance and mechanical reliability.

As darkness descends, the race takes on a totally different atmosphere as the pit lane becomes a sea of light and the night is punctuated by mower headlamps streaking past.
Last year’s event saw a new distance record of 354 miles established, so the leading teams will be keen to raise the benchmark still further, although the weather will play a key role as ever.
All profits to charity

Once again, the £6 entry fee to the race (children and parking are free) raises money for good causes and once again our chosen charity is the local Ingfield Manor School for children with cerebral palsy.

There will be full trackside catering and race commentary throughout, or you can listen in on Radio Le Mow on 87.7 FM.
With the previous victorious team members back to defend their crown, old scores to settle and new faces on the block, the challenge is now on for the greatest event of the year.

Boy, this sounds like it would be a fun event to attend.

Is there an event such as this here in the states?

The closest event similar in nature is the annual / famous 4th of July "12 Mile 500" held in Twelve Mile, Indiana.  It is "enduro" in nature.

The 12 Mile 500 is America's oldest lawn mower race, running continuously since 1963, which earned it recognition by the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association as a first-year USLMRA Hall of Fame Honoree, in 2009, along with the legendary Boogie Woogie Man, Chuck Miller and the very first USLMRA member ever - April 4, 1992 - "Racy Ray" Mrocks.
