AVS Single/VTwin Dipstick Removal
« on: February 19, 2016, 12:28:23 pm »
Question: I want to remove the dipsticks from the BP and from the FXS. It would appear both are the same size hole, but neither are threaded. Being fairly close to 7/8", I can use a 1" tap to thread the hole. Before I do that, is anyone aware of a plug that is already being used? I would prefer aluminum, second would be plastic. I want to make sure I get the right tap to match the plug thread. I would prefer not to use NPT if possible.

are  you sure they are not threaded, most all after you take out rubber grommet, the standard old plastic plug they used to use will screw in and seal

Because an AVS has the dipstick in the block, and uses an o-ring seal, rather than the screw-in grommet on the dipstick-mounted ("Non AVS") sumps.

Why
Because I noticed some engines at the All-American would either vibrate or push out the dipstick tube and lose all the oil, or at least enough to blow the motor. And being one to look for ways to improve durability (that's 50% of a race) I think it's a great idea.

I would just wad up some duct tape and stuff it in there.
It's sticky, so it will stay.
If it doesnt, dont worry, it's a Briggs and will break soon anyhow.
 :D
I think NPT will be your easiest route.
There is a locking type o-ring cap I have seen for the oil tanks on Harley's, but dont know the size. Maybe something to check into.

That would be great. Really what I would like to see is an upscaled version of what ARC sells, with the captured O-Ring and all that.

A nice touch would be a drilled and tapped hole in the bottom of the plug for the twins, so as to add a small rod with a graduation, really a M6-1.0 for the finer thread. The rod would have enough thread so as to add a serrated jam nut under it.
