« on: August 27, 2015, 05:52:02 am »
Im a newbie to all this i could really use some experts opinions what would i have to do to mod a vertical 14.5 ohv briggs to run upright .modding the intake manifold and exaust are no prob i have welder and alot of tools my biggest concern is oil flow. does a constant flow of oil need to go to the head ?and do i need to cut different Oil flow slots In the castings around bearings please give me some insite on how to properly do this so i can get it done right with out blowing it up .also any ideas on performance mods that wouldnt be super expensive thanks alot . Maybe Old Goat will see and comment on this, he did many of them, trouble is they broke cranks like they were candy. If I were doing it I would use a good electric oil pump such as the kind NASCAR uses to circulate oil for the rear axles. I rigged one up for a 9 hp flattie but changed at the last minute. You need to get oil moving around so the crank hits it and sends it flying, useing a regulat oil pump (brigggs padle wheel) would help if you squirted oil on it. Kenny (Tn.) did this on a 12 hp flattie and just used a fuel pump, he never blew  it from lack of oil.

THE LOWER END SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM BUT GETTING OIL TO THE UPPER END WILL BE.

Tilt the block so the slinger is in the oil.  Intake side down.

The head will get plenty of oil. Plug the original crankcase vents. Vent out the valve cover.

Ran mine 3 years with a support on the flywheel side and never broke a crank.  Spun it 6800-7000 all the time.

One more question when i tip it intake side down should it be level or tilted up a few degrees .and how do i know how much oil to add also will it hurt it if the oil is higher than the cylender just thinking to have eneph oil in it it might be to were the piston itself is splashing around in the oil

I had mine at roughly a 45 degree angle.

The oil is the tricky part.  If I remember correctly in ran 1.75 quart in mine.  I used a piece of wire as a dipstick.  Ran the oil about 1/2 up the slinger.  Mine would puke out a little and then be fine.  If you over fill it it will puke a bunch out.

Be sure you have an adequate vent on the valve cover.

My buddy runs 31ci brigs horizontal. He did same as Paul said he did on his but instead he used avs pan on non avs block. Cause instead of support bearing on outside on the crank. He put one in avs pan.
