Mounting engine backwards?
« on: June 12, 2015, 02:18:10 pm »
Curious, I am seeing this more and more and wondering what advantages it has?  I'm building a 33 AVS now for the GP but may upgrade to CP, would it help to mount it backwards?  Just wondering why it's getting so popular lol

Its for weight distribution,  and or, for hood/steering clearances.

I can see it for hood clearance, but not weight distribution.
A single cyliner engine is a canitlever. The weight of the jug and the cylinder head are just hanging out in space, and supported by the base/oil pan, which by simply rotating 180 degrees will not change weight distribution one bit.

Ed, you are correct in regards to weight distribution in relation to the base of the engine,  but since it is on the chassis, it will change weight distribution on the chassis.

But, if it's mounted in the exact same location, with only the orientation being different, it won't. It's simply hanging out in space. The actual weight of it only comes into play where it makes contact with the chassis.
I tried this a few years ago. Set a roller chassis on scales and set a single cylinder on it it different ways. As long as the pan/contact points were in the same places, forward/back, side to side, it did nothing to change left/right or front/back bias. Now, if I moved the actual contact points ofthe engine on the chassis, then it changed it.

Jim, look at it this way. I weight about 180lbs.
Lets say I am exactly proportionate on my left and right sides.
Example, my wife gets mad, hits me on the head with an axe, and it splits me into 2 portions, left and right. Those 2 weight the same amount.
Now, lets say I was glued back together, and stand on a scale. If I lift my right arm straight out, perpendicular to my body, that is a cantilever of sorts.
Now, in doing so, my right side still weighs 90lbs. I did not increase it's weight though the base, my feet. It's just hanging out in space. The weight of my arm still travels through my no longer severed torso, down my legs and to my feet.

I'll see what Bert says, he is better with physics than I am. Possibly due to having more mass in motion than myself.

I am the mass master.

There may be a SLIGHT difference of weight loading on the mounting bolts of the engine. The side with the head hanging out may have a bit more weight load than the opposite side, but it would be minimal. Not enough to worry about.

Now, about late model dirt cars with "lift bars" and all the other stuffs. Sorry, but physics says that's a bunch of hooey. They say lifting the body under braking pushes the chassis down for extra weight. Where is that weight coming from? The Body pushing against the sky? Nah, it's all an exercise in roll steer, helping the car turn with the left rear overloaded by increasing right side wheelbase and shortening the left side (LR tucked into the bodywork).

BERT, you mean steering with wheelbase.
