I never looked into typical jackshaft size pulleys with a 1" bore, but it may limit your pulley size options?

I am using a Murray mower deck spindle housing and a piece of 5/8 keyed shaft.

The Murray deck spindle is shorter than any other and they are 5/8 shaft. I have heard a lot of people use this set up.
