Speed calculator for peerless 400
« on: May 09, 2015, 09:00:36 pm »
I've seen the EC one but does not work on the 400's and doesn't show all the math. Tryed Roosters and it's for 1:1 box and messed it up, sorry. I sent you a message.  Does anyone know the formula to figure out from pulleys , to 3 speed trans in each gear to, sprockets and tire diameter to find the final ratio in each gear and mph in each gear at 7000 rpm to get a ruff speed. I have  all the tooth counts inside trans and everthing else just don't know the math. Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

(Engine to Tranny pulley ratio x sprocket ratio) X (Bevel Input ratio x Trans Gear)    This is your final overall ratio then use your tire roll length to calculate your MPH.

Thanks. How do you do the tire roll to calculate mph . Final ratio in each gear x length of tire roll? To find out speed in each gear?

I have to do the old school way and work the MPH the long way because I don't know any easy equation.  So here goes.

Using 7,000 RPM per your original post.  RPM = Revolutions Per Minute.  That gives us the time to build our hour from.  That wasn't for you Owen but for others who may read later.

Tire roll out of 49".   I literally wrap a tape measure around my tire.

Final overall ratio, from previous post- 10:1   (I'm just throwing this out there, so don't freak out people, 10 is easier to divide with)

7000/10 = 700 tire rotations in 1 minute

700 x 49" = 34,300" traveled in one minute

34,300" / 12" = 2858.33 feet travelled per minute.   Remember 12" in a foot.

2858.33 x 60 (minutes in an hour) = 171,500 feet traveled in an hour

171,500 / 5,280 (feet in a mile) = 32.48 MPH

I hope I did that right.

Yes you did it right!
Here is a shorter version :7000/10=700
700x 49=34300x5=171,500/5280=32.48

Thanks.   So the 5 you used is is 60 minutes in a hour divided by the 12" in a foot.   And who sat in class and said we wouldn't use math in "real" life.

Owen would you save me the hassle of taking mine apart.  What is the gears for 2nd & 3rd in our 350/400s?    I remember the input bevel to be 13 tooth to 33.

Engine pulley 8" trans 5"= 1.6
Trans sprocket. 26 axle 44= 0.5909
Crown 33 tooth. Pinion 13 = 2.5384
Tranny 1st 16/39= 0.41025
           2nd 21/34= 0.61764
           3rd 25/30= 0.83333
Tire roll on my 13" tire is 41".

Pullies 1.6 x sprockets 0.5909= 0.94544
1st gear 0.41025x piƱon crown ratio 2.5384=1.04137
Final gear ratio 1st 1.04137-1
                      2nd=  1.56781-1
                      3rd=   1.9999
7000 rpm/ 0.41025=17062.766
17062.766x 41(wheel) = 699573.4
699573.4/12= 58297.783
58297.783x 60=  3497866.9
3497866.9/5280= 662.47mph in first gear. Lol lol

Must be doing something wrong here???
I tryed swaping my 1-3rd gear ratio from
39/16= 2.4375 to 16/39= 0.41025 and it made it worse.
Man I'm bad at math.

I think 32.48 MPH is kinda fast for a 10:1 ratio as in the example.  Check your numbers again on the tranny to axle ratio, should be around 1.7

^^^ I tryed and something's wrong with my math. 662 mph. Lol

If I switch the trans gear ratio around I get
1st 46.45 mph
2nd 69.94 mph
3rd 94.37 mph
At 7000 rpm
I can start of in second gear and seems hard to believe that it will go 70 mph. It should stall trying, it's a stock lawnmower clutch .

I ran the numbers through and here's what I get.

I got 0.625:1 pulley ratio.
input shaft to bevel gear is 2.538:1
1.692:1 output to axle ratio.

Total reduction ratio not including the shifted gears is 2.683935:1

1st gear is 2.4375:1
2nd gear is 1.619:1
3rd gear is 1.2:1

Total drive ratios in each gear will be:
1st is 6.542:1
2nd is 4.345:1
3rd is 3.221:1

The ratios sound right. But plugging them in to get MPH using what stvn_VA posted, I still get some seemingly odd/large numbers.
41.544mph 1st gear.
62.55mph 2nd gear.
84.378mph 3rd gear.

As a machinist and CNC Programmer, I have brainwashed myself into enjoying doing math stuff like this. Probably because of what it's getting used for....  :)
