Hey guys,

Ok I got a good deal on a good running engine. Just like anything used I would like to go through it and replace gaskets, worn out parts etc. It came out of a Poulan tractor (looked fairly new). One problem... I can't see any markings or tags showing the hp of the engine. So I was wondering if the pros out there can tell me by a few pics

Prolly a 17hp 31ci briggs. Take a pic of the top edge of the valve cover, the numbers
should be stamped in that.

I Looked and nothing is stamped. You can see in the engine cover 2 rivet holes (I'm guessing where the engine tag was). When I get home I'm going to clean it up and see if I can see any other markings

My next question is; if this is a 17hp Briggs is it a good engine to race?

Thank you very much for your help

DOES THE OIL FILL GO INTO THE BLOCK OR THE OIL PAN? THE PAN IS GOOD, IF IT'S THE BLOCK IT WILL NEED SOME HELP.

It goes along the engine, then connects to some pipe. One goes to the engine, the other goes to an elbow with a oil plug. I'm guessing I have the pan style?

The numbers are stamped into the valve cover, they are hard to see,you might have to rub it with some fine sandpaper

I had one like that.  But mine had a cast valve cover.  No markings.

Your missing the other shroud that covers the one you have in the pics.  These were labeled "vanguard".

Mine is a 28 CID.  With a oil pump and filter.  Not a pressure lube.  Just filtration.

Just a regular OHV with a fancy name and shroud.  And the filtered oil.  Still a splash lube.

I'm going to clean all the grease and oil off of the block, hopefully I'll find some more markings..

So is this a good engine to dump some money into? or should I cut my losses now and look for something else? I Google Image searched and the few I found that look the same are Intek's..

I just want a engine that is going to last and be competitive... wait isn't that what everyone wants?

If the dipstick tube goes into the pan, and not the side of the block, it is good to build, and is either a 28 or 31 cid. The only way to tell the difference between them without any id tag, is to pull the head and measure the bore. If the dipstick tube goes into the side of the block,  it is an AVS series engine, which will take more money, and work, to make live.
If you quit when you're behind, you will never win.
