running a single on its side

does anyone know if it is possible to run a ohv single on its side with the head pointing in the upward direction

You have to run it at an angle so the oil slinger is in the oil though.  The intake port will be facing down, so you will need a custom intake.

You also need to drill the block so the cam and crank get oil.

Vent out the valve cover.  Plug the original vents.

Supporting the crank on the flywheel side helps greatly.

Why bother the Honda and clones have far superior heads than the briggs and purpose built as horizontal shaft

Agreed.  Or build a Kohler horizontal.   Far superior engines.

I wouldn't ever do it again though.  Much better options out here now. 

Zach Kerber single horizontal is NASTY......much more power than any briggs.

Um fastest lap time set by open kart in indoor racing was by horizontal 16.5ohv beat star, blockzilla, gx390, and Tecumseh start.

but they are talking about the same engines…..
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!
