looking for more torque off the line 16hp briggs twin
« on: January 06, 2015, 02:38:59 pm »
i have a good running 16hp briggs twin, but compared to my 16hp single cyl. briggs the twin is very slow to accelerate but has great top end. i tried pully swaps but then i lose top end. i know there must be a difference in torque from the single to the twin, but is there any way to get more ooph off the line? maybe jetting? tried the search, but i'm not sure exactly what to look for.
also it's a 1980 or 81, i'll get the ser. # if needed

I'm guessing the single is a OHV and the twin is a opposed flat head.

The OHV will always beat it stock for stock.

What mods have you done to each engine?

I've only seen 1 opposed that could beat a ohv single even built and that was Marty Kunkels back in the day Paul!!!

Oh boy. This again..
And Ed said "The time Rooster came up to Wisconsin, he ended up 2 laps down to OHV singles".

i've done nothing to the single cyl. didn't even touch the governer. i'have only adjusted up the gov. on the twin, the rest is stock. i do think the one lunger is an ohv, i'll have to go peek. most of my performace has been from pully swaps. it's amazing how much quicker the single is. not even close off the line. top speed is about even tho

Leave the governors alone if you don't have a billet flywheel.   Especially the twin.

Those engines run in the same modified class.

It sounds like you'd be better off building for a governed class.   Like GP.   The OHV single is the perfect engine for this class.   There isn't a class for the Governed Twin yet.

What is your intention?   You never answered that.

sadly at the moment these are just back yard racers. we've got a group of about 12, but the closest sanctioned races are 3 to 4 hrs away. all our mowers are basically stock, just pulley swaps. we have one guy that has figgured out how to get the vari-drives to run, and man they are quick.

also i haven't run the govener too far on the twin, just gave it maybe 300rpm more. it's been fine so far and this is it's 5th season with 12 or so races a year

Here's problem with vari drive. First is I had a buddy who built one for a customer and it was fast but problem is he went to big of a pully on the engine and to small on the tranny which blows up tranny. I have a friend who runs one for fun with mtd tranny but doesn't go as fast but last with vari drive. So if you run vari drive mostly get ready to have a spare tranny. Vari drive would be best to run but mtd trannys wont take it for very long.

so far he has two seasons on the varidrives. i think he is running a 5" on the motor and trans. so i'm betting he did reduce the pulley size on the trans.luckily we have quite the tractor graveyard to pick parts from.
