Balancing ohv single
« on: December 19, 2014, 08:38:01 pm »
Does anyone know someone that can do this right and guarantee it to be truly balanced. Someone that does this as a full time job. Thanks for any help. Someone that can balance twins and singles of all makes.

Thanks for the reply Nic. Has anyone else had stuff balanced by Don ? Anyone else anybody recommends? Wish there was someone closer but I can't find anyone that works on Lawnmower engines. My motor is a 31 briggs non Avs . So large journal.

Balancing is a very difficult thing on a single because you don't have anything to balance against.  Your never going  to be balanced throughout the entire rpm range.  Although you can get it better it all depends on the rpm that you balance the motor to.  You defiantly want to find some one that has balanced a lot of singles.  I would try to see if you could get huffy to do it.

I was not aware they shake at lower rpm and them clean up at higher rpm !! Nobody told me. What rpm do they normally clean up? I got atleast 2000 in this motor and didn't want to throw a rod out the side in 5 minutes.I started the motor and didn't shake to bad at idle but as I brought the revs up to 2500 on tac it got more intense . Tommy is the one who balanced my crank. I must say he was great to deal with and very helpful but I'm not able to get ahold of him , email or on here.hope everything is ok. This was over a year ago and finally got this thing built. Thanks for all the input guys. Guess I'll just try it out and see if it cleans up at higher rpms. Hopefully just paranoid . :alcoholic:  :lol3:

What combination are you using? Rod, piston, crank, bore, does it have brass weights or does it have the syncro balance assembly still in it. The reason for all the questions is these can only be static balanced, not spun balanced like a auto engine. For that reason the balance will never be perfect, but it shouldn't shake. Tommy is the best at doing singles, try his e-mail , he responds best to that.

Tried emailing him. He had my .20 over 31 Avs piston with rings, pin, clips ,arc Avs rod all new,non Avs 31 crank and my pulley. Everything. He makes the steel weights as far as I'm aware. I'm not saying anything negitive about tommy. He is a GREAT GUY!!! I've never had anything balanced before so I don't know if this is normal. Like a said I have not turned the motor over 2500 rpm. It feels like I'm getting shocked as I rev it up, like I said I'll try it out past 2500 and see if it smooths out.

The first time I fired my 31OHV  I didn't know it would shake like that either my previous was a 28 flathead mostly stock.   Emailed my builder from the garage and I'm sure he got a kick out of me.   I had tools sitting in my seat and in less than a minute everything loose was laying on the floor!!   At race RPM's she is smooth as silk.   My advice is Lock Tite and lock nut everything.  I've shook loose most everything you can think of.

I balanced my Kawasaki flathead myself and it is smooth as silk at idle and above 3500. Anything in between idle and 3500 it shakes like heck.

I'm still here, I don't look at the message board on here very much, but I do look at tdaniels@rocktenn.com every day. I have done many of the Briggs singles and almost every one requires the same counter balance weight (this is the amount of weight that the sum of all of the parts tell you it needs) only changes maybe a couple of tenths of a ounce.

I always ask you guys about the pulley that goes on the crank that drives the belt. If it is a quality piece and you have not modified it in any way, I usually don't get you to send it. Stamped pulleys or inexpensive pulleys are rarely in balance, sometimes they are welded on and this messes them up. You can easily check the pulley by taking a wooden dowel or a broom stick, wrap tape on the wood until it fits snug in the pulley, then place it on a set of knife edged paralell pieces of metal and see if it will stay still in any position you put it in and not turn. When I say knife edge I mean a very sharp piece that the wood sits on.

As someone said earlier you can NEVER complety balance a singe cylinder engine it's not possible, but you can make it better and yes you can move the rpm up or down where they shake the worse. Al of mine are aimed for the 6000 range and may shake in the lower range,

One more thought, the base the engine is mounted on need to be thick enough and enough mass to help with the inbalance you will have. Also check under the mounting bolts to make sure you do not have a "soft foot" Place the engine on the base and try to rock it, if you gat ANY movement put shims under it to make the base as flat as you can get it.

I have a 1/4 inch engine plate welded onto the frame. I'll loosen the engine bolts and make sure it doesn't rock at all. I'll try running it without the pulley and if it make it any better i'll order a billet one. The only Thing I added was a split shaft lock on bottom of engine to hold pulley from falling off. Thanks tommy for replying and everyone else for the info.
