Billet rods
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:37:57 pm »
How many laps does a arc rod last. I know it's kind of a loaded question and there are a lot variables.  My question is how many people change their rods out every year or after so many laps.

I know someone on here said they buy a new ec tranny every year because it was cheap insurance. Do you do that with rods. Seem like $125 for a new rod is cheap insurance.

Just trying to gauge when I should plan on getting a new one

I'm the tranny guy!!!

I have run ARC rods a long time.   Some had a TON of laps on them.  Only advice I have is if you take it apart re install with new bolts.   EVERY TIME!!

I think a lot depends on what rpm you are running the engine at,if you are only running between 7000 to 8000 rpm they could probably run forever if you are running 11000 to 12000 you should at least change the bolts after a season if it runs that long

Would it be worth buying some ARP bolts or do you guys use something else that is just as good to replace the bolts that come with the rods?

everything is built around a max rpm of 7200. This is a flat head and the piston is a little on the heavy side. Going to take the motor a part in a couple of weeks so we'll see what it looks like.

This is the first small engine I have modified beyond just putting in after market parts and a port clean up.

A lighter piston would take some stress off the rod,a lightweight pin and piston rings will help too

Ron. Fully understand the light weight piston deal. This is a kawi so nothing available but cam and flywheel.  So I had to come up with some inventive ways to get it to 32 cid

I don't think I did too bad it came in third at the all American.

Jason mikula who won fxt in the uslmra finals runs stock rods and pistons. With kawaski v twin. You have more torq cause of big parts then any other motor. So you don't have to spin it to the moon.

That's what he tells you.    That motor has very few "stock" parts.

hp= rpm x Torque
                 5252

rpm does have a lot to do with it.

A lot of thought has gone into this motor and it was an experiment on my part to see if I could make it work. I still have a bit to do to the valve train, ports and head and might even try to stoke it a bit more. If I can do that, the piston and pin will be a lot lighter do to a more common replacement.

Ordering the bolts and bearing soon.
