interesting question
« on: November 14, 2014, 10:44:04 am »
I heard an interesting theory the other day for a well respected mechanic (dieselTruck),,,he said that an aluminum flywheel will help out of the corners, but horsepower will be lost do to the less rotating mass,,,it almost sounded reasonable, but I've never heard this before, can anyone lend some expertise to this ?

In my opinion this is true.  For example I have a 66 VW.  In order to help on "take-off" we use a lighter flywheel which really helps it jump out but lets say when you start up a hill and start pulling because the flywheel is lighter you don't have as much built up momentum and it bogs down quicker.  For me the main reason for using the aluminum flywheel is just as much for safety as for performance.  But I do agree with the statement from you diesel mechanic

Energy can neither be created or destroyed, it's simply moved somewhere else. Get a big flywheel spinning and the mass is hard to slow down, so spin a light one and it's easier to slow. I found it very hard to get my mower to move with the lightened cranks and flywheel, but it was great for accelerating out of a cornor at the start of the race as the flag was dropped.

Normal 8hp cranks weigh in around 124 oz, mile weigh 84-87, it's like having twl aluminun flywheels!

Yep, like trying to get some people off the couch and do something.  Its hard to get them off the couch but once they get in motion they tend to stay in motion until said energy is spent.

We're getting uncomfortably close to a discussion involving ergs. And ham.
