Horizontle/side shaft setup
« on: October 31, 2014, 08:21:19 pm »
Hello all, I am trying to build an FXT with a horizontal shaft engine. I have looked high and low but cant seem to find build pics of the setup. I have seen one where the belt runs straight from the engine to the rear with some giant aluminum guard but there has to be another way. The mowers around here mostly run vertical shaft engines except for one and you can not see the driveline at all.
please help! pics and advise would be greatly appreciated! I plan on trying to run a belt or belts from the engine to a jackshaft and chain to the rear. thanks guys.

What are you running for an engine?

Best bet to put your clutch on the engine and run chain to your jack shaft.

Then chain to the rear axle.   No belts to slip.

I plan on running a 55-60hp vanguard 7k rpm, would one of those NORAM clutches hold up? I thought about running a "timing" style belt and pulleys for a no slip setup, anyone tried that?

Had a buddy try one on a FXS.  He was using a expensive Harley belt.   He kept taking the cogs off the belt.

I run 520 chain on my FXT.  Noisy but never breaks.  Or slips.

Most run 40 chain jack shaft to rear axle. Iv tryed running 35 with big 16 tires and it broke in half when it hooked up. That's with silver pro. Now I run 40 tractor supply chain and haven't had a problem since.

I was planning on running a clutch on the engine (left side) to a jack shaft then to a sprocket on the right side, I don't think rules allow drive shafts.

also I was told by a racer to gear it as follows
1,15 tooth-clutch
2,16 tooth-jackshaft in
3,15 tooth-jackshaft out
4,58 tooth-axle
does anyone have any suggestions or comments on this?
(not sure of track length) Im just wondering if bigger or smaller sprockets with the same output ratio would work better.

Gearing has so many variables. Tire size, rpm, track size.  If your running 15 inch tires on the back you would be fairly high geared.  I don't know what ratio you would run for 12 inch tires.  We need more information to help you.

I know the final ratio im looking for I was just wondering if there were any advantages to gear sizes in relation to each other, im running 12" hoosiers.
does anyone have suggestions on a steering setup where the steering wheel is vertical but does not run over the top of the engine?
like this.

I ran that type of steering on my old mower, just install a chain from steering wheel down to steering shaft to the front wheels, we used Gold 35 chain worked great.

Over thinking things don't work well... (kids) keep it simple stupid... When u over think it it never works the way u want just way u want it to just take Ur time an go by trial an error...  Two on the steering u can run like a shaft out toward Ur mower then chain to a mother shaft then to Ur turning fork
Or run a shaft down instead of the chain witch is cheaper an won't break... U shouldn't break the chain but it's more Likely to than the steel rod
