Build advice for 17hp B&S
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:54:02 pm »
Im looking for advice on how to build up and get more power from my  17hp.  I have a carb from a 20hp and plan on putting that on but other than that I am kind of lost when it comes to building these things up. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

First thing buy a flywheel. Better than a carb

Actually, the first thing you need to do is see if it has the split style valve locks. If it has the slip over retainers, it will probably swallow a valve.

You can do anything to this motor that you can do to a v8. You have to decide how far you are willing to go, a fully built 31 can run you $1800 in parts alone.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Im just saying most people don't build full tilt race engines, also, you don't have to use the billet crank.

OK, I was just joking, but with flywheel, starter, rod, piston, crank, pushrods, head gasket, rockers, intake and carb, new valves, guides, gaskets, I went over the 1800 mark, and shipping is the killer on top of that, still have to run stock cam till funds build back up
