help/advice needed for briggs 8.5hp engine
« on: September 14, 2014, 02:51:45 pm »
Hi all i am after some help setting up a briggs and stratton 8.5hp l/c engine,

Its not for a racing mower its for a Toylander i am building for my son im not finished yet but on test drive what i am finding is that when he gives it full throttle then comes off the throttle the engine cuts out someone said about removing the governor but how would i then set up the carb??

also is it a big job to remove the governor?

also could i fit a motorbike carb would this work? i have seen the racing carbs but really don't want that expense.

Thanks in advance for any help as this is very new to me also here is a picture of what i am building

Judging the size of the unit and the size of your son.  I'd leave the governor on and leave the stock carb.   Leaving it stock will make it safer and the engine will last much longer.

Yeah i would much rather leave it stock but where he is so young he is constantly on and off the throttle and every time he accelerates and he comes off it quick it cuts out?

Is there any easy fix for this

Regards Mark

When you say cuts out off the throttle, are you referring to it just dies after that point, or that it falls on it's face next time into the throttle?

Adjust the idle.   Probably too low.

Looks like you possibly still have the factory choke linkage in place, could it be choking the engine at wot and flooding it out?

i will try the idle but i will need to get new springs for the clutch first, yeah the choke linkage is still in place at the moment but it doesn't push the choke when on full throttle.

Thanks for all the help i will have a tinker at the weekend and update
