Model 31 AVS
« on: September 13, 2014, 03:25:41 pm »
I picked up a mower several years ago and decided to go ahead and start a racing project.  I have a 31P777 (I believe) motor which I think is a AVS motor.  I know that these motors are becoming pretty popular since it is considered "Standard" for anything about 14hp.  I have read some of Huffy44's posts and was wondering if there are any pictures of exactly what needs to happen to adapt the several parts that need to be changed, especially the adaptation between the 28 and 31 parts.

Right now I believe I will need:

New Flywheel
Model 28 Crank (w/ adapter)
Model 28 Sump

What can I modify to create a better engine?  I would rather modify than to buy new if I can help it.

Thanks!

Use the avs sump with an oil pump.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

"what is the advantage of using a 28 crank?"

The one big one is the crank gear for the cam is much bigger (thicker) and less prone to breakage which usually take out the cam and the oil pan. Lighter (that was mentioned). This requires a early AVS in order to put the 28 pan on. Or as you mentioned from some of my past posts, you can weld up the bloak or the the later 31 AVS pan to accept a gasket for the pan.

I did not try JB weld, it is good stuff, the problem with it is aluminum is pourus, I was pretty much unsuccesful in  welding because of the oil in the metal. however enough metal adheared so it could be sealed with the Permatex product called "The Right Stuff" that stuff will seal anything.

Try the JB and let us know if it holds up, to use the 28 pan you have to add material to the top and bottom of the block (or the pan) and then file/machine it flat. The key here is to get the aluminum as clean as possible. I even tried baking it for two days in a welding rod warmer, did not help, the weld was not that pretty.

Will the flywheel fit-yes, however beware of the AVS with the coil offset to the the cylinder bore, be warned this advances the timing and will require the hub for the later AVS. ALWAYS use a timing light when setting  the timing on these engines.

There really is no need to discard the AVS pan. You can buy a bushing for the lower crank that will allow use of a 28 crank in an AVS pan. Easy to do.
