what briggs 28 to choose? New guy questions
« on: August 17, 2014, 06:30:06 pm »
ok I am sure this is posted but I have had no luck finding it. I am seriously looking into building a SP racer from a JD180 that I picked up. I have a old race kart with the hydraulic rear brake and 1 1/4 axle so that is good. I also have a john deere 180 that runs like a champ to build the chassis out of. I have also picked up a peerless 740 tranny to use (powdered gears).

now the good deal is that I have a scrap yard down the road with 15-20 mowers that I can scavenge for parts. I have decided on a building a briggs 28 and running in the SP class. I know that I want a iron sleeved block to start with and I "think" I want one with a nut holding the flywheel on. this is so I can use some different counter weight? not sure about that.

so the question is how to identify the correct briggs 28 to build? I can buy several if that is what it takes.

I am new to mowers but not racing. I have had a couple 150+ mph drag cars and I just build a 100+ HP 1990 Honda pilot. I have all the fab tools needed and some experience. this should be fun.

anyway I know yall like pics.

Possible engine?

current engine runs great

also seen this one there

my tranny

the 180

my pilot during construction. that is a 670cc rotax snowmobile engine

Thanks. I was aware that the OHV was not legal. I t was just one of the pics on my phone. there are 5-6 12.5 flatheads out there.

Get the one with the nut on the crankshaft, then you can buy better parts and will have to do less machine work.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

that is the plan. I guess you can unbolt the eccentrics on that crank.,

plans include billet flywheel, arc rod, brass weights, carb, cam, springs, port clean up, etc. budget up to $1500 if needed.
