converting from 6 inch wheels to 8 inch wheels
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:09:33 pm »
How many of you have converted a mod X or supersportsman style chassis on small 6" wheels to the larger 8" wheels legal in uslmra? Trying to save money by converting an old chassis to bigger and better things.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Going from 6"to 8"you will have to move axle up in chassis , move fenders up and move brake caliper, those are the major things to do.

I did. Moved axle, hangers and caliper. Fenders were easy as I had 2 piece mtd fenders.

Thanks Fellas, are there any differences in handling characteristics?  The chassis works excellent as of now just want to make sure I don't alter anything that will mess up other things.  I understand I need to keep it square etc.  Just trying to make sure I don't create an issue.

Were you able to keep the original frame height?  I think I have seen pictures, were they posted several years ago?

Yes, it was a few years ago I did that conversion. There might be pictures floating around of it. Gray mower, at the time I think it was #9.
The frame ended up about 1/4" higher than were it was with the 6" rears.

On my Murray I made the cassette hangers and caliper bracket so I could switch back and forth from 8's to 6's and back again. I split the fender horizontal just above the running board and  made a removable bracket for the back of the fender . Also made the bumper adjustable too.

while you are modifying the fenders, remember you are now allowed to sink the seat into it to get the 13" seat height from the ground to the bottom of the seat.  If you are going by the uslmra rules ofcourse
