The green wire on the tach should hook to the negative side of your coil which a the kill wire on the coil I hope this helps

Correct me if I'm wrong but an automotive tach will not work unless it is the Equuis brand that clips in the plug wire.

My buddies have used them before on mudder mowers and the way we hooked them up was hook the green wire from the tach to the kill side of your coil and presto you have a tach. That's how I always hooked them up the usually read within a couple hundred Rpms

Ya thats exactly how i have it hooked up,all my grounds are right and the light is on but no ones home lol,i hooked up the green wire by its self on the coil tab on the blower housing and ive hooked  it up with the green wire and the kill teether wire tied together and still nothing!! Could it be a faulty tach???

Anything is possible like I said I seen literally a dozen or more of these automotive tachs on mower engines and they all worked it could be a faulty tach.
Just a thought is your vanguard a v twin? If so you might try tying both coil kill wires together and hooking the tach to them if that don't work it probably is a faulty tach.

Yes it is a vtwin 16 hp and both coil wires are connected together and come out as one wire on the blower housing,i have an extra older tach im gunna wire it up to see if that one works,do i have to hook up all the wires again to try it or can i just do the green wire or no?

The wire on the bottom of the coil is the wire you tie the green wire from the tach into
