Leaky Lucy
« on: May 07, 2014, 03:04:16 am »
Just got home from being at work for the last few days to find my new mower gem sitting in the driveway!! Its a hoodless rusty Toro blah blah blah. Plan to scrap the mower and keep the 407777 Intek 40 in all its oil leaking glory!! Its code is 000407YG. Am i correct to assume this means manufactured in April 7 of 2000? And if that is correct is it more than likely im looking at an engine without the upgraded 49 rods? Outfitted with the 5/8 cam ends? Smaller oil pump? Is the rocker arms all the same thru the years for the 40/44/49? any better than the others? Plan to teardown and inspect and check clearances first thing. Anything in particular i should look for or at specifically?  Any answers would be great! :D

Well i know the original rods in the Inteks when they first came out were failing and they were superced by the 49 style rod as a replacement and all 40/44/49 now have that style rod in them. Can you tell by the date PJG56? How can i tell the difference by looking at them? If it has 49 style rods ill hone n rering it and lap valves and roll with it if bore checks ok. If it has the weaker rods then might as well ARC up and get a real rebuild.....

Briggs didn't start putting the 49 rods in them until around 08'. As Paul said it has the weak 40/44 rods unless someone has replaced them. The 49 rods are much thicker on the beam of the rod. You would have to see the two side by side.

If i replace the rods with ARC rods will it need to be rebalanced? I know i would in a vehicle application but not sure on a lawnmower engine. Also know no one near me does that kind of work if was to be needed.....

All of the engines that I've installed the ARC rods in have been pretty smooth. They are pretty well balanced but it wouldn't hurt to have it done.

Stock 49 rods hold up to 7000 rpm pretty well,I've had a set in a 44 that reved well above 7000 many times
they have about 20 races on them at this time.At this time if your not building an all out motor,I would try
the 49 rods@about $40.00 each you can buy 3 of these for the price of one ARC rod.Just another option for you

Thanks for the info Paul!! That is the route ill probably be taking at this time. 49 rods, flywheel, clean up the ports a tad, lap the valves, the bore checked ok..a tad on the highend of tolerence but should take a hone and new rings ok, and rebuild carb. Really just needing a motor thats will be semireliable with a little more power than stock to put in my mower. Since im new to this i think i need to concentrate on my chasis and how to adjust things on it and how it effects the handling before i sink money into a more powerful engine. More than likely even with a flywheel ill be leaving the governor on and just adjust it to give me a little more rpms. Not to trusting in factory rocker arms and studs for to much more than that. Thanks again!

I've had no issues with stock rocker arms or studs!
