Aluminum Valve Covers
« on: April 10, 2014, 12:05:37 pm »
I have seen from time to time the discussion has come up about aftermarket valve covers, but as far as aluminum/billet valve covers go...are they legal yet for prepared classes?  If not, are spacers beneath the valve cover allowed? How tall are the spacers allowed to be? I would like to use one for a C/P engine, but I don't want to start making chips until I know for certain.

Jeff, the best I understand it is the billet or any aftermarket valve cover is not legal in the prepared classes. You can use a spacer for the valve cover and I haven't ever heard of a particular height rule on that either. Don't make much since to me as to why its not legal in these classes but that's what they choose. Besides bolting on a billet valve cover is worth an extra 5 horses and we all know that. Lol

With a supossedly stock cam and rockers...I cant quite figure why anyone would even come close to needing them...unless they just wanted to spiff up the motor.

Exactly what I was thinking Jeff. I think he confused prepared class for a stock governed engine class.

Jeff,  last year, I took 2 stock aluminum valve covers ( single ohv briggs ) and cut off the "bottom" 1/2" or so of one, smoothed it flat on the cut side, then used that piece as a spacer for the other aluminum cover.
If you quit when you're behind, you will never win.

I didn't know Briggs OHV valve covers came in aluminum?  Another "hen's teeth" piece to try to find?

That sounds like a great idea, if I could find a couple of those covers!  Sounds like I need to just manufacture a spacer for simplicity's sake.

The aluminum covers I've only seen were on a single ohv briggs labeled as a vanny which it wasn't.

Found an old greasy one on Ebay, LOL.  But instead I think I'll make a 2" tall spacer, just to tease the tekkies!

If the minutia of valve covers is a problem because of some kind of added gain, then shouldn't allen head screws be illegal as well, since they are round and more aerodynamic than hex bolts?
