Broke ARC flywheel hub
« on: March 10, 2014, 09:47:17 pm »
So i was correctly removing my Vanny's flywheel yesterday and using some pblaster also. I sometimes can't get it to pop on the first shot so i stop and rotate it to a different spot. On the second spot i heard a crinkling/crack. A few minutes later i see that the area near the whole split and is rising up as the bolt tightens down. Thank the lord a bit of heat on the hub and a gentle pry got it to pop free. Could have been a huge mess getting that bugger off with only one working bolt.

How common is this? I've taken about 20 of these off/on since they made these legal for us last year.

I thread all the way into the flywheel and pull it all together using a puller like a steering wheel or harmonic balancer puller. No more broke hubs
Be sure to use a bolkt that will thread all the way thru the flywheel so to use all the threads.

It has always helped me, after lapping-in the hub to the crankshaft, to place a dab of anti-seize on the crankshaft so as to aid in future removal.

I thought about that, but i thought that would defeat the purpose of the lapping. I used to lap them on but now i just install them right on a clean crank since the builder of the hundreds of motors we run said he has no issues doing it that way. I imagine lapping them makes them harder to remove (i know mine used to be)
