Measuring width
« on: March 10, 2014, 12:05:28 am »
By the rules does the width measure from farthest point out of rim or tire tread furthest out? I'm running 13-6.5-6 on 8.25-6 rims. If it's furthest point at 40 wide you loss 1.5 inches do to side wall,38.5.Thanks for clarification

What if your rims stick out further than the sidewall of the tire? Does the rim not count to your total width?

I would preffer my tire be further out than the rim face in the prepared classes, gives an actual wider tire footprint on the ground for better stabilty.

Side wall to side wall, I've never read anything different. Most of the time the rim will be a touch wider, not an issue in any tech line I've been through.

Wow, OK. That is why our SP was narrow at the national race we went to. We have always measured rim or sidewall, which ever stuck out more. Also why we run narrower rims than most others in order to get the wider footprint.

I'm confused (seriously) to me the amount of tread is the foot print? Squeeze it in or use a wide rim the tread is all that's goning to hit the ground unless you run a huge rim and roll it (the sidewall) over then the inside of the tread wants to go up leaving less surface. The biggest thing that helped me (thanks Kenny) was finding tires that had a flat tread when mounted, then I didn't have to put them in a lathe to make them flat, what a difference!

I think the point of the wider rim is to stiffen the sidewall not give you a wider foot print.

Deereracer, that is exactly why I run wide rims. Stand with both feet touching, anyone can push you over, spread them out and it's nearly impossible.
