I run 35 chain from clutch to gear box on both of my Twin super Mods and #40 from gear box to axle. Just use a good chain like RLV extreme keep it tight not banjop tight but tight and lube before every race, I have run the same 35 chain all season and I run verticle motors. Never had an issue.

I ran 35 all the way around but when I went to bigger and wider hoosiers the 35 chain couldn't take it from the jackshaft to the axle. So now I have to run 40. I suggest start running 40 chain Gbox to axle or jackshaft to axle. If your lucky with small tires with more spin you can get away with 35.

I'm not running a vertical.  But I switched to 530 chain on my FXT.   I'd never go back.  Super forgiving and won't break.

I have been using 520 for years might be overkill but I never had any problems. I now have a grasscar mini late using #40 and I will be changing over to 520 next season. Motor to angle box I run 420 much better chain than 40 all you need to do is cut the width down on the gears so it fits. You can also use #41 gear on clutch that fits 420 perfectly. We also have one person runnin 35 on his mini and has not had any problems but he has a very high quality chain I think its rlv extreme. You can buy 520 split gears for microsprints that what I use. #40 chain is not a high speed chain and they get kinky!  420 is a high speed chain.

I use 420 chain to the axle and this year i ajusted the chain only one time in the summer. I'm converting the noram star to 420 also i'm done with the 35 never had problem until this year i broke chain and burned sproket .
