"2Low2Mow" stock carb tunning
« on: September 18, 2013, 01:24:14 pm »
I fully built my motor 14.5 hp briggs, now producing about 40 hp
How do I know when the motor is running perfect and how do I tune my carb?

How do you know it's making 40hp?

That's just a rough guess but I'm pretty sure it's anywhere from 35-40hp

You guys kill me with your horsepower "estimations". Absolutely fantasy. That engine you are describing came from the factory producing just about  .50 hp per cubic inch.  A hot nascar enginne will produce about 2.25 hp per cubic inch..and that's near
10, 000 rpms. A formula one engine is probably the highest tuned engine in the world and it makes about 3.5 hp per cubic inch at near 20, 000 rpms. That engine of yours...IF you could spin it 7, 500 rpms  (and you can't), MAY make 19 or 20 hp.  Or about  .75 hp per cubic inch. Thems the facts.

You guys know how it is...you burn the midnight oil just trying to squeeze a little more out of one..and anyone that does it regularly know horsepower comes in fractional little increments...not huge gains all at once. Then you read a post like that and you just can't NOT say SOMETHING.  No mention of a cam, carb., valve springs or anything else that actually make horsepower. I guess all that power must have came from that flywheel nut he had on his list of power adders....lol! Now I've got a headache now from all this typing....I'm gonna go get me a cold one.....

Most of the vtwins out there may make 55 or 60 hp and that's putting $3,000 minimum just in the motor

To answer your original question, regardless of HP, check the spark plug.  If you don't understand how, then google "How to read spark plugs".  Then google "Tuning carbs for small engines"

Buy a digatron or mychron with a EGT.  That is the best way to tune your carb.  Or get it on a dyno.

Would a regular car dyno work or would I have to put it on an engine dyno

Engine dyno and someone who knows how to run it.

But really a EGT will get you close
