Intek Twin oil seal
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:52:31 pm »
We are having a terrible time getting the bottom seal of our Intek twin to seal. I've replaced it countless times and it won't seal. the pulley is at the bottom of the engine. The sump base bushing is tight. Just tired of it. Is there a better seal than the Briggs OEM one?

Lester, is it just starting to happen or has it always been a problem? They are rather a pain to get the seal started on the crankshaft where the seal rides. I always use an oring pick to start my seals onto the crankshaft. If it just now started ocurring or is ocurring after a lil run time Id be replacing the crankcase breather or check your hose for blockage.

Tank, I know the deal you are talking about. The factory edge is razor sharp. I cut a couple getting them over the journal. The last time I had it apart I radiused the edge and scotchbright to finish it up and the seal goes on great now. Dont know if this is what Lester is dealing with or not. Just 2cents worth.

I know what you mean about the sharp edge. I always install my seal after the sump is on. We use a feeler gauge to"walk" the edge on. If I ever take the crank out again it's going in the lathe and have the journal radiused. I have installed many of these with out incident though. This will be the 5 th time on this engine. I'm going to try another brand of seal.

I made a seal installer. It is an old 4 on 4 steel hub. I removed the flange and turned down the hub to the same diameter as the crank journal. I put the seal on the hub (going through the seal the way it should) then slide the hub onto the crank and slip the seal over to the crank as I'm pressing it into the sump. Used it on three engines and no problems. Quick and easy too.

If you have access to a stock of old microfiche card stock they make awesome seal installers. Just wrap one around the crank and install the seal the fiche card will guide the seal right over the sharp edge.
