Steve, the smart spark as kohler calls them that you are speaking of is junk. Not sure if you are using it for stock use or what but to run the regular magneto coil they say you have to change the flywheel. Keep in mind I'm only referring to the stock flywheels. I've had customers that didn't want to spend the money in those type of ignition systems soI have installed a regular coil and moved it as close to the flywheel as possible and they are cutting grass fine no problems. The flywheel for the smart spark coil is smaller in diameter.

426cc is 13hp OHV, CV13, typically found on John Deere STX Series
The 460cc is a 15 & 16hp OHV. I have a CV460/16hp on my John Deere LT160 – it has the standard coil set up.
I have seen the “SAM” of some of the 16hp versions, usually “Scotts” or “Sabre”
“Spark Advance Module” according to the service manual. The best thing to do with the SAM is see how far
You can throw it on the highway.

I used a different coil from a CV492(17.5hp), Had to do some grinding and make a bracket but it worked.

IF YOU CHANGE COILS ON THE SMART SPARK, YOU MUST ALSO CHANGE THE FLYWHEEL TO A NON SMART SPARK FLYWHEEL. ;)

it will work but, It runs like poop(if at all). I get's a very weak spark. That's where the SAM unit comes in.

I also, Agree with Grub, Change the flywheel. I did this conversion a couple years ago and it ran great, but I could not get the Generator to work., That's where I stopped, and used it for a boat anchor.

By chance would anyone have a part number for a non smart spark flywheel? I swapped out coils on a cv25 vtwin command and it idles well but runs rough on higher rpm. Didn't know about the flywheel. And will they swap with out modification? Thanks.

Any... If its a courage throw it away... But the higher hp the bigger the bore... All the way to 30 hp is the same size block... Most parts interchange... 30 hp have closed chamberd heads... No real benefits there but all run well are string and make lots of hp pretty easy... Midwest has all the go fast parts you will ever need...
There's somethin' in the works...
