33 AVS
« on: February 27, 2013, 11:40:37 pm »
i have a 33 AVS that i am ready to build. i need help though, because when i got it, it had already been opened, and played with, and i can't find any schematics to show me a parts break down. here is the engine info:
       M- 331877
       T-  0036 G1
       C-  100901ZD
it is a full pressure lube, thru crank to the top bushing. the issue i want to clear up is that i think it also had a slinger in it, because someone has a "shim" on the end of the cam...here are some pics:
the "shim": this is what i think is left of the oil slinger bracket, and that someone removed the slinger, thinking it was part of the governer assembly?? ( or is the slinger, and governer built together on these?)
this is how the "shim" was installed on the end of the cam, when i tore the engine apart...i think that they had to put this piece of the slinger bracket back on the end of the cam, to keep the proper end play?

i have a billet cam to put in it, if that makes a difference ( i am pretty sure it dosn't, but want to be sure ).
sooo, if anyone can confirm my suspicions, i would greatly appreciate it. oh, and i want to know if i need to put a slinger back in it ( i am pretty sure it needs it ), and if one out of the 31 AVS engines will work, since i have the part number for one of those. thanks- Jim.

My 33 had a slinger in it. The crank in that however wasnt cross drilled.

They are not fully pressurized as one is lead to believe. That is why they have the slinger in them. remove the flapper pieces on the slinger and install a slinger or you will blow it up. I have had several over the years with cross drilled cranks why I got no clue because they are not a pressurized motor.
The only fully pressurized briggs single is the 26 cube vanguard.

Has anyone played with these motors at all? Do they build good power to cubic inch like the vanny v-twins?

I dont mean to hijack this thread but i know where one of these motors are and in good shape for cheap and he mentioned it lol....

As far as the slinger on the 33 we did the same thing here.

I have a 31 avs model number starting with 31Qxxx. It is full pressure, from the factory with no oil slinger. I have been racing this motor for 2 years with no problem. I've been told 1000 times there is no such thing as a full pressure 31avs, there is. I'll also tell you they are almost impossible to find, I havn't found another one yet used. You can buy them new various places on-line, only thing is if you call and ask them if it's full pressure they will say yes if the motor sticker says so but you will be dissapointed when you get it and it's got a slinger in it. I just got lucky & got mine from a local small engine guy that replaced a motor under warrenty & had this in a box, didn't even know what I had when I got it as it was my first motor.

Wayne, what are all the numbers on the engine you are referring too? Model, Type, Code? all the 31 AVS engines i have looked up, list a slinger in the breakdown.

Briggs rep even says they dont exist. Go figure. I have never seen one and I sure would not chance not running a slinger.

The one Jim has I traded him. It has a pump in the sump that runs off the cam. oil travels from pump to bottum journal, then threw the crank to top journal.

Mine feeds oil to both crank journals and the rod.

George, i already bought one for it, i aint chancing nothin with the money i spent on parts...lol.

thanks Chuck, i am pretty sure it had one, the "shim" that was on the end of the cam is clearly part of the bracket for the slinger/governer assembly.

Mine feeds oil to both crank journals and the rod.
mine also feeds the through the bottom journal, up to the rod, and then to the top journal.
thanks everyone for your help on this, as i am new to this series of engines, and i dont want to waste the money i have put into it so far! :D
